John E. "Hutch" Hafeman

          John E. "Hutch" Hafeman, 82, Spalding, passed away on October 18, 2019 at his home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family. He was born on January 6, 1937 in Powers, MI, son of the late Fred and Ann (Veeser) Hafeman, the ninth of twelve children. On May 21, 1960 he married the former Barbara Bal at St. Francis Xavier Church in Spalding.
 
          John attended Powers Spalding High School and after graduating, he left the area to try various jobs, working on Mackinac Island, in Milwaukee and Florida. He then returned home and worked for Our Own Bakery, Mich Con Gas Co. and Clairmont Transfer. John was best known in the area for owning Hafeman's Evergreens, a business he operated with his two sons.
 
          He is survived by his wife, four children: Terry (Bonnie) Hafeman, Steve (Tammy) Hafeman, Cheryl (Kurt) Ekberg and Cathy Hafeman, eight grandchildren: Jordan, Saundra, Amy, Tanner, Trevor, Troy, Eric and Katey, six great-grandchildren: Carter, Chloe, Addison, Devin, Rowan and Everett, three sisters: Evelyn Goretske, Virginia Lesperance and Joyce Schneider, sisters-in-law: Janice Bal, Dianne Williams, Eunice and Marilyn Hafeman, special friends: Dennis and Patsy Miller, as well as many nieces and nephews.
 
          John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Irving, Bob and Pat, sisters: Lorraine, Irene, Marion, Harriet and Joanne, brothers-in-law: Donald Bal and Gary Williams.
 
          Friends may call from 12:00 (noon) to 3:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday October 24, 2019 at St. John Neumann Church in Spalding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday at the church with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Burial will follow Mass in the Spalding Township Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the church parish hall.
 
          His family would like to thank Katey Dombrowski and OSF Hospice for their wonderful care they gave John.
 
          The Allo Coolman Funeral Homes are assisting the Hafeman family.
