Carl Allen Lawson, 78, Gladstone and Escanaba resident, passed away December, 9, 2017 at UP Health System- Marquette. He was born in Detroit on June 26, 1939, son of the late Clifford Paul and Anna (Nantais) Lawson. He married the former Patricia Corbisier on August 26th 1961.
At age 17, Carl joined the United States Navy for four years. He was stationed in Pensacola Florida, and was reassigned to Guantanamo, Cuba for 31 months. In 1960 he finished his four years in the Navy and then joined the United States Coast Guard the same year. His first duty station in the Coast Guard was in Charlevoix, Michigan aboard the cutter Sundew for four years. He was then assigned to Grand Haven, Michigan Coast Guard Station, followed by a recruiting duty in Wausau, Wisconsin. In 1969, he was Officer in Charge of the Rock of Ages Light House in Lake Superior until 1970, and then Officer in Charge of the Marquette Coast Guard Station from 1970 to 1973. From 1973 to 1976, he was on recruiting duty in Worcester, Mass. While stationed there, he was promoted to Master Chief (E-9). His last assignment was in Jonesport, Maine, where he was a commander of an 82 foot vessel called Point Hannan from 1976 to 1978 until his retirement from the United States Coast Guard at the age of 39.
After retirement, Carl and his family moved to Escanaba, Michigan. In 1980, he was hired by Mead Paper Co. as a Loss Prevention Officer, until he retired in 1996. Carl volunteered at Lemmer Elementary School for many years, where he was known as "Papa Lawson".
He enjoyed spending time with all his children and grandchildren, attending family reunions each year, walking in the mall with his buddies, and spending time with his wife, Pat.
He is survived by his loving wife: Pat, three children: James Paul (Deanna) Lawson of Escanaba, Michael Joseph (Donna) Lawson of McLouth, KS, and Jacqueline Ann (Wayne) Lyons of Cheboygan, MI, one sister: Joanne Griffin of Portland , OR, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 4:00 p.m. A luncheon will follow services at St. Thomas the Apostle Church parish hall after 5:00 p.m.
