John C. Lungerhausen
Date of Death: January, 02 2012

John C. Lungerhausen, 94, Hermansville, passed away on Monday January 2, 2012, at home after a short illness. He was born on June 1, 1917 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, the son of the late John and Florence (Skinner) Lungerhausen. On April 25 1959, he married the former Lorraine Schumacher Kuhnhenn, who passed away in 2006,
John attended Purdue University for a degree in Electrical Engineering in the mid-1930s. He worked in that capacity for Blackmer Pump in Grand Rapids, Bowser Equipment in Fort Wayne, IN, Detroit Diesel in Detroit, Keller Tool in Grand Haven and Process Equipment in Belding. In the mid-1950s, he and his brother, Richard Lungerhausen, started brothers, inc., in Hermansville, manufacturer of stainless steel liquid handling tanks. He loved working with his brother, Rich, and his wife, Lorraine, office manager at the plant, and he loved schmoozing with their customers all over the United States.
He was the consummate gentleman, curious about everything, and had an incredible memory to entertain with a good story or joke. He loved the outdoors and rocking on the back porch, Manhattan in hand, surrounded by family and friends. In the 1990s, he introduced his children to the joys of camping and canoeing in Michigan and rivers and lakes in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. He gave his family many fine memories of those trips that will always echo in their hearts.
John was a camper and counselor at Interlochen Music Camp in the 1930s and enjoyed attending reunions with his daughter, Emilie, also an alumna. He was a ham radio operator for many years and loved communicating with friends around the world.
He had good health (and all of his teeth!) until the last few years when he had to slow down and concentrate more on the reading he loved, especially Rudyard Kipling and John Masters.
John is survived by his children: daughters Helen (Tom) Ryan of Ann Arbor, Rhoda (David) Banta of Reed City, Marian Burgess of Hermansville, Jane (Roy) Moore of Copperas Cove, TX, Mary (Dick) King of Green Bay, WI, Emilie (Jeff) La Roux of Monroe, “adopted” daughter, Mary (Bob) Ryan of Suttons Bay, and son Oscar Carl Lungerhausen of Hermansville. He had 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine, his parents, his stepmother, Eva Lungerhausen, brother Richard Lungerhausen and his wife, Anne Louise Lungerhausen, brother William Lungerhausen, son-in-law, Lyle Burgess, Jr., great-grandson Daniel Burgess, and many of the friends he had acquired over the years.
Honoring John’s wishes, he was cremated, and with his wife Lorraine, will be buried in Clinton Grove Cemetery in Mt. Clemens at the Lungerhausen family plot later this year. There will be a memorial service this summer in Hermansville. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Macomb County Historical Museum, 15 Union St., Mt. Clemens, MI 48043.
