John J. Hughes Sr., 93, Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday January 4, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on February 14, 1917 to the late Dr. Andrew and Onnie (Connors) Hughes in St. Louis, MO. On June 12, 1948 he married the former Mary Lou Hirn at St. Joseph's Parish and she preceded him in death in 2003.
John was raised in the Flat Rock area and moved to Escanaba after he and Mary Lou were married. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1935 and later proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army spending time in Italy. John retired after many years from Mead Paper in 1979. He enjoyed gardening and canning his vegetables, cross country skiing, hunting and just being in the outdoors.
He is survived by two children: Jack Hughes Jr. and Cathy (Dwaine) Menard, one brother: Henry (Ileen) Hughes, two sisters: Catherine Perry and Jane (Harv) Hewitt, three grandchildren: Robyn (Dave) Douglas, Christopher Hughes and Sarah Hughes, three great-grandchildren: Brooke, Bryce and Jonathan as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son: Michael Hughes, one great-grandson: Benjamin Douglas and six brothers: Robert, Francis, Charles, Andrew, James and George Hughes.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday January 7, 2011 at Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba with Parish Prayers at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 8, 2011 at St. Joseph and St. Patrick's Parish with Fr. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial in John's name will be established and donations may be made in his name.
